The best advice I can give you for any tutorial is: "SAVE OFTEN".  There's not much worse than losing your work due to PSP crashing or a computer glitch.  I will be putting reminders along the way to save your work . 

Unlike most of my tutorials, this one has very few screenshots.  I didn't feel they were necessary, and I hope you won't either.

For this tutorial, you will need:

Paint Shop Pro  which you can get at the Jasc site.
(Written using version 7.03, but earlier versions should work)
My selection files. Click here and save the zip file to your hard drive.  Each selection file is numbered in the order you will use it.  Extract to a folder on your hard drive. (TIP: Selection files can be loaded from any folder, so I recommend creating a separate folder for these files.)
My pattern files. Click here and save the zip file to your hard drive.  Extract to a folder on your hard drive.
The following color swatches. Right click and save to your hard drive.

        

1. Open a new image 400x300, transparent background, 16 million colors.

2. Save your image as "friends.psp".  You can now save your image at any time by pressing Ctrl+S or hitting the save icon .

~~~ LEFT PILLOW ~~~

1. Open the three checked patterns your downloaded.

2. Add a new layer and name it "left pillow"

3. Load the selection "1_left_pillow_trim.sel" from your hard drive.

4. Flood fill your selection with #308373.

5. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

6. Flood fill your selection with white.

7. Float your selection.

8. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 70; Blur: 20; Color: #85D6D0

9. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

10. Deselect.

9. Load the selection "2_left_pillow.sel" from your hard drive.

10. Flood fill your selection with #308373.

11. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

12. Flood fill your selection with the green checked pattern. (I adjusted the angle when using my checked fills - adjust them to your liking.)

13. Float your selection.

14. Apply a cutout:
      Horizontal and Vertical: 3; Opacity: 80; Blur: 15; Color: #85D6D0

15. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -3.

REMINDER:

1. Add a new layer and name it "right pillow"

1. Add a new layer and name it "middle pillow"

2. Load the selection "5_middle_pillow_trim.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill your selection with #4169A6.

4. Contract our selection by 1 pixel.

5. Flood fill your selection with white.

6. Float your selection.

7. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 70; Blur: 20; Color: #A2B5D6

6. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

7. Deselect.

8. Load the selection "6_middle_pillow.sel" from your hard drive.

9. Flood fill your selection with #4169A6.

10. Contract our selection by 1 pixel.

11. Flood fill your selection with the blue checked pattern.

12. Float your selection.

13. Apply a cutout:
      Horizontal and Vertical: 3; Opacity: 80; Blur: 15; Color: #A2B5D6

14. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -3.

REMINDER:      

~~~ SHIRTS ~~~

1. Add a new layer and name it "shirts".

2. Load the selection "7_left_shirt.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill with black.

4. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

5. Flood fill with white.

6. Float your selection.

7. Apply a cutout:
    Horizontal and Vertical: -3; Opacity: 50; Blur: 15; Color: your choice
    (I just switched around the colors I used on the pillows.)

6. Deselect.

7. Load the selection "8_middle_shirt.sel" from your hard drive.

8. Repeat steps 3 through 6, changing your cutout color.

9. Load the selection "9_right_shirt.sel" from your hard drive.

10. Repeat steps 3 through 6, changing your cutout color.

~~~ FACES ~~~

1. Add a new layer and name it "faces".

2. Load the selection "10_left_face.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill with #9C745A.

4. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

5. Flood fill with #FEE8DB.

6. Float your selection.

7. Apply a cutout:
    Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 100; Blur: 20; Color: #EBCCBA

8. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

9. Deselect.

10. Load the selection "11_middle_face.sel" from your hard drive.

11. Flood fill with #AD8442.

12. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

13. Flood fill with #FDEACC.

14. Float your selection.

15. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 100; Blur: 20; Color: #E7CFAB

16. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

17. Deselect.

18. Load the selection "12_right_face.sel" from your hard drive.

19. Flood fill with #63432E.

20. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

21. Flood fill with #DBAD8C. 

22. Float your selection.

23. Apply a cutout:

24. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

1. Add a new layer and name it "eyes".

7. Flood fill with #7FAACC.

8. Load the selection "16_eyes4.sel" from your hard drive.

9. Flood fill with #A9724D.

10. Load the selection "17_eyes5.sel" from your hard drive.

11. Flood fill with #8D5733.

12. Deselect.

13. Apply a Guassian blur of 0.5 (1/2).

14. Add a new layer and name it "eye highlight".

15. Load the selection "18_eyes6.sel" from your hard drive.

16. Flood fill with white.

17. Apply a Guassian blur of 1.0

1. Add a new layer and name it "hair".

2. Load the selection "19_hair1.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill with #7C4628.

4. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

5. Flood fill with #FCDD89.

6. Float your selection.

7. Apply a Rough Leather effect. (Effects/Texture Effects/Rough Leather)
    Color: #FDBA83; Angle: 315; Luminance: 17; 
    Contrast: 17; Sharpness: 8; Blur: 25;  Light Color: black.

8. Load the selection "20_hair2.sel" from your hard drive.

9. Flood fill with black.

10. Load the selection "21_hair3.sel" from your hard drive.

11. Flood fill your selection with black.

12. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

13. Flood fill with #7C4628.

14. Float your selection.

15. Apply a Fur effect. (Effects/Texture Effects/Fur)
     Blur: 5; Density: 80; Length: 50; Transparency: 30

16. Apply a Topography effect. (Effects/Artistic Effects/Topography)
     Width: 5; Density: 75; Angle: 315; Color: #7C4628.

17. Deselect.

REMINDER: 

 

~~~ BLANKETS ~~~

1. Open the three checked patterns your downloaded, if you don't have them open already.

2. Add a new layer and name it "blanket middle".

3. Load the selection "22_blanket1.sel" from your hard drive.

4. Flood fill with black.

5. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

6. Flood fill with the blue checked pattern.

7. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 3; Opacity: 70; Blur: 15; Color: #A3B5D7

8. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -3.

9. Load the selection "23_blanket2.sel" from your hard drive.

10. Flood fill your selection with black.

11. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

12. Flood fill your selection with white.

13. Float your selection.

14. Apply a cutout:
      Horizontal and Vertical: 3; Opacity: 70; Blur: 15; Color: #85D6D0

3. Flood fill with black.

4. Deselect.

5. Add a new layer and name it "block colors".

6. Move this layer beneath your "blocks" layer.

7. Using your paintbrush and bright colors, add color to your blocks.
    Size: 3; Hardness: 100; Opacity: 100; Step: 25; Density: 100
    (Change your brush size to 1, if needed, to get into the corners.)

REMINDER: 

 

~~~ FACE ~~~

1. Add a new layer and name it "face".

2. Load the selection "37_face.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill with black.

4. Deselect.

5. Apply a Guassian blur of 0.50 (1/2).

6. Lower the opacity of this layer to 35%.

~~~ CHEEKS ~~~

1. Add a new layer and name it "cheeks".

2. Load the selection "38_cheeks1.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Flood fill with #F8B0D5.

4. Load the selection "39_cheeks2.sel" from your hard drive.

6. Load the selection "40_cheeks3.sel" from your hard drive.

3. Resize your image by 80°. (Make sure All Layers IS NOT checked.)

4. Sharpen once.

6. Load the selection "41_blanket6.sel" from your hard drive.

7. Flood fill with #811482.

8. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

9. Flood fill with white.

10. Float your selection.

11. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 80; Blur: 25; Color: #AC6EAE

12. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

13. Deselect.

14. Load the selection "42_blanket7.sel" from your hard drive.

15. Flood fill with #811482.

16. Contract your selection by 1 pixel.

17. Flood fill with the purple checked pattern.

18. Float your selection.

19. Apply a cutout:
     Horizontal and Vertical: 5; Opacity: 80; Blur: 25; Color: #AC6EAE

20. Apply your cutout again, changing Horizontal and Vertical to: -5.

21. Deselect.

22. Move this layer beneath your merged layer.

23. Merge visible and you're done!  Save in PSP format to use later.
