This tutorial was inspired by a painting I have by
Marjorie M. Anderson.
I bought this painting years ago and have always loved it.

In this section, we will be "painting" our image -
applying the basic colors.

*** PAINTING THE FACE ***

1. Turn off the visibility for Raster1/Layer1 and merge the remaining layers.

2. Rename this new merged layer "base".

3. Add a new raster layer and name it "face".

4. Click on your Paintbrush tool and use the following settings

5. Using the following color swatch as a guide (right click and save) paint colors on your "face" layer, changing the size of your paintbrush as needed. You can adjust from these colors as needed.

6. Here's what I have so far (with and without my base layer showing):

7. The lighting is coming from our right, so the lighter colors appear on our right in the picture.

1. Add a new raster layer and name it "dress".

2. Change the size of your paintbrush to 15 and paint your dress with medium shade of tan. (we will move this layer beneath the "hair" layer when we're done, so don't worry about covering your hair at this point.)

3. Change your paintbrush size to 1-2 and using darker shades of tan, shades of dark rose, and light shades of brown, paint on some highlights:

4. Drag your "dress" layer beneath your "hair" layer.

2. Change the size of your paintbrush to 10 and paint the side of your basket with a dark tan, change to a light tan and paint the lid of your basket.

3. Change the size of your paintbrush, varying the size from 1 to 4 and paint on some lines to detail the shape of the basket:

4. Move this layer beneath your "arms" layer.

*** TWEAKING (AGAIN) ***

1. Take a good look at what you have so far to see what's missing and what needs adjusting.  Here's what I have so far:

2. As you can see, my Indian Maiden has no neck!  (Oops - I forgot this step!) I also want to fill the gap between her dress and basket as well as the gap between her dress and leg.

3. For her neck, add a new layer and name it (what else?) "neck".

4. Change the size of your paintbrush to 10 and paint the neck area with a medium/dark skin tone.

5. Using a slightly darker shade, add some shading, then drag this layer beneath your "face" layer:

6. Make your "dress" layer active and fill in the gaps, if you have any. Repeat this step for any other gaps or spaces you may need to fill.

7. I also adjusted the ends of my hair to give it a more natural line.

8. Here's what I ended up with:

9. Duplicate your image and close the original.

10. Save your duplicate image as "Indian girl2.psp"

11. We will complete our "painting" using the duplicate and in case you get desperate you can start fresh from this point!

That's it for our "painting".
Now we need to finish our painting by blending our colors.
