This tutorial written by Cathy on July 7, 2003.

This tutorial was inspired by a painting I have by
Marjorie M. Anderson.
I bought this painting years ago and have always loved it.

In this section, we will be blending our
colors to finish our Indian Maiden.

*** THE NECK ***

1. Turn off the visibility for all but your "neck" layer and your Raster1/Layer1 layers.

2. Flood fill your Raster1/Layer1 layer with a bright contrasting color (I used a bright yellow), which will allow you to see any "missing" areas on your face as you work.

3. Click on your Smudge Brush (PSP8) or Retouch Tool (PSP7) and use the following settings:

2. Click on your Smudge Brush (PSP8) or Retouch Tool (PSP7) and use the same settings.

3. Using this tool, blend the colors on your neck to smooth the shading (turn the visibility for your "face" layer on if you need the perspective, just make sure that your "neck" layer is active):

*** THE FACE ***

1. Turn off the visibility for all but your "face" layer and your Raster1/Layer1 layers.

2. Click on your Smudge Brush (PSP8) or Retouch Tool (PSP7) and use the same settings.

3. Using this tool, blend the colors on your face to smooth them out and define the facial features. (Change the settings for Hardness and Density down to 50 for a "softer" look.)

You can switch back to your Paintbrush if you need to add more color, but turn on the visibility for your "base" layer first to see what you need.  This layer will hide a lot of those "imperfections".

4. Here's what I have (the first without my "base" layer, the second with it):

*** THE DRESS ***

1. Turn off the visibility for all but your "dress" layer and your Raster1/Layer1 layers.

2. Click on your Smudge Brush (PSP8) or Retouch Tool (PSP7) and use the same settings, changing Hardness and Density to 75.

3. Using this tool, blend the colors on your dress to smooth them out and define the lines of the dress.

4. I found that I did not have near enough shading for my dress so I switched back to my paint brush (size: 3) and added some (quite a bit) more color:

5. Switch back to your Smudge Brush and start blending again until you are happy with your dress.  Play with the size of your Smudge Brush if needed; I increased the size to 10:

*** THE HAIR ***

1. Turn off the visibility for all but your "hair" layer and your Raster1/Layer1 layers.

2. Click on your Smudge Brush (PSP8) or Retouch Tool (PSP7) and use the same settings, playing with the size as needed.

3. Using this tool, blend the colors on your hair from the center (her part) out, being careful not to blend into the headband.

4. Change the size of your Smudge Brush to 3 and blend the colors on your headband.

Here's what I have so far:
