Well, all it took was completing my first
"pixel painting" tutorial and I was hooked.

This tutorial written by Cathy on December 26, 2003.
Written using Paint Shop Pro Version 8.1, but should
work fine with earlier versions.

 

 

*** COLORING OUR GIRL - PART I ***

1. Change your foreground color to #D1A276.

2. Using your Magic Wand click inside the hair area.

3. Flood fill with your foreground color.

4. Change your foreground color to #F4E3B6.

5. Use your Airbrush Tool, with the following settings:

6. Click in your selected area 3 or 4 times.

7. Change your foreground color to #D1795B and click in your selected area 3 or 4 times to get this effect:

8. Click on Effects/Distortion Effects/Curlicues and use the following settings:

Number of Columns: 12
Number of Rows: 12
Radius: 100
Strength: 50
Clockwise: checked

  Save

9. Change your foreground color to #E7D6CE.

10. Using your Magic Wand click inside the face area.

11. Flood fill with your foreground color.

12. Float your selection (Selections/Float).

13. Apply a cutout with the following settings:

Vertical: -3
Horizontal: -3
Opacity: 50
Blur: 10
Color: #D1795B

14. Reapply your cutout, changeing the Vertical and Horizontal to 0.

15. Defloat (Selections/Defloat). ***Leave selected***

16. Add a new raster layer and rename your new layer "details".

17. Change your foreground color to #E989AB.

18. Click on your Airbrush Tool and change the size to 5 and apply color for the cheeks:

17. Apply a Guassian Blur of 1.50 (Adjust/Blur/Guassian Blur):

18. Select none. (Selections/Select None)

  Save

19. Make your "pixels" layer active.

20. Change your foreground color to #E7D6CE.

21. Using your Magic Wand, AND holding your shift key click inside the arm, and leg areas.

22. Flood fill with your foreground color.

23. Float your selection (Selections/Float).

24. Apply a cutout with the following settings:

Vertical: 2
Horizontal: 2
Opacity: 30
Blur: 10
Color: #D1795B

25. Reapply your cutout, changing the Vertical and Horizontal settings to: -2.

26. Select none. (Selections/Select None)

27. Using your Magic Wand click inside the neck.

28. Flood fill with your foreground color.

29. Float your selection (Selections/Float).

30. Apply a cutout with the following settings:

Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 30
Blur: 5
Color: #D1795B

31. Reapply your cutout, changing the Vertical and Horizontal settings to: -1.

  Save

32. Change your foreground color to #FEE0FE.

33. Using your Magic Wand click inside the shirt.

34. Flood fill with your foreground color.

35. Float your selection (Selections/Float).

36. Apply a cutout with the following settings:

Vertical: 3
Horizontal: 3
Opacity: 25
Blur: 20
Color: #B612B8

37. Reapply your cutout, changing the Vertical and Horizontal settings to: -3.

38. Select none. (Selections/Select None):


 

  Save

 

*** COLORING OUR GIRL - PART II ***

1. Using your Magic Wand click inside the pants.

2. Flood fill with the pattern fill you saved earlier, using the following settings:

3. Select none. (Selections/Select None):

  Save

4. Change your foreground color to white.

5. Using your Magic Wand, AND holding your shift key click inside the collar and sock areas.

6. Flood fill with your foreground color.

7. Select none. (Selections/Select None)

8. Change your foreground color to black.

9. Using your Magic Wand, AND holding your shift key click inside both shoe top areas.

10. Flood fill with your foreground color.

12. Float your selection. (Selections/Float)

13. Apply an Inner Bevel (Effects 3D Effects/Inner Bevel), using the following settings:

14. Select none. (Selections/Select None)

  Save

15. Change your foreground color to #C0C0C0.

16. Using your Magic Wand, AND holding your shift key click inside both shoe sole areas.

17. Flood fill with your foreground color.

18. Float your selection (Selections/Float).

19. Apply a cutout with the following settings:

Vertical: 5
Horizontal: -5
Opacity: 100
Blur: 10
Color: #808080

20. Select none. (Selections/Select None):
